Between 1999 and 203 twenty five children and adults died suddenly and another 54 developed serious cardiovascular problems after taking drugs to treat ADHD.  The FAD just released these statistics.  Another 26 deaths from 1969 to 2003 included death by suicide, intentional overdose, drwoning, heatstroke, and from "underlying disease."  These drugs are amphetamines, such as Adderall, and methylphenidates which are Ritalin, Concerta, Methylin, and Metadate.
The REAL Question:  Is ADHD a real or a contrived condition?  I have found much controversy over this, and the most damaging finding to me is that the ADHD patients in adult life cinue on their drug concourse using benzodiazepines, and other mental drugs.  Are we making addicts out of our children?  Our schools allegedly receive $$ for each diagnosed ADHD child.  If the Pediatrician or other Physician does not adequately test the child, go for another opinion.  And do not let that teacher who possibly does not have proper discipline or cannot deal with highly intelligent students persuade you that your child is ADHD.
After all, both Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein would have been diagnosed ADHD if they lived in today's world.  Instead, they used their incredible minds for progress.

Update:  on November 4, 2005:  Lilly Research Laboratories circulated a Boxed Warning for Suicidal Ideation in Children and Adolescents.
re:  Safety Data on Strattera @ ( atomoxetine hydrochloride) - Suicidal Ideation
What followed was the updated prescribing information and Medication Guide for Strattera were enclosed with the letter.
DOES YOUR DOCTOR HAVE THIS INFORMATION?  HAS YOUR DOCTOR MADE YOU, THE ULTIMATE CONSUMER AWARE OF THIS INFORMATION?  LILLY COMPANY HAS REQUESTED ANY SERIOUS ADVERSE EVENTS TO BE REPORTED TO 1-800-lILLY-Rx or to the FDA Medwatch program by phone (1-800-FDA-1088 or by email www.fda.gov/medwatch.
INTERESTINGLY, THE UNITED STATES IS THE COUNTRY WHICH SIMPLY DOES NOT UTILIZE ADVERSE REPORTING EVENTS LIKE THEY SHOULD.  FRANCE, ENGLAND, GERMANY ARE LIGHT-YEARS AHEAD OF US IN THIS.
GO TO THE FDA MEDWATCH WEBSITE (ABOVE) AND DOWNLOAD THE FORMS FOR ADVERSE REACTIONS TO ANY DRUG.
Are we wasting our children's brightest minds?  Are we incapable of dealing with high IQ's?
By the way, Canada already issued warnings on these drugs.  Seems the Canucks are way ahead of us on this one.
